@Service Magazine Summer 2017 | 23 Military Externship Program yields nine more graduates “Anytime another soldier asks me about this program, I urge them to do it. The benefits are endless!” That’s how NatalieWright sums up the GE Healthcare Military Partnership Externship Program, now in its sixth year. Wright and eight other externs finished their training on July 26 and will officially graduate on November 9. Natalie, a Biomedical Equipment Specialist in the U.S. Army Reserve, completed her biomedical and imaging training rotations in the Detroit area. “The training I received at the GE Healthcare Institute was amazing,” she says. “I learned a great deal, from networking to diagnosing issues with GE CT systems. “I’ve gained knowledge that will enhance my civilian career and my military career by showing my leaders that I’mmotivated to be a better soldier and part of my unit. It has also improvedmy personal life by giving me great friends and amazing coworkers.” Winning proposition Launched in 2011 in partnership with the Army Reserve, the extern program has produced 107 graduates, the majority receiving job offers from GE Healthcare. “It’s a win-win,” says HR Manager Judy Andrade , who leads the program. “It enables reservists looking to transition into civilian roles to gain hands-on experience. The military wins because the externs can transition out with higher success rates or assume greater responsibility within the military.” Externships are open to reservists who have completed nine months of military biomedical training. The program includes four months of biomedical and four months of imaging service training at hospitals.
