@Service Magazine Summer 2017 | 35 Employees across USCAN Service volunteer to help others GE Community Service Day in Southeast Wisconsin GE Community Service Day (CSD) is one of GE’s largest single- day volunteer events worldwide. In Southeast Wisconsin, more than 2,100 GE employees, retirees and friends participated in this year’s event, which marked the 23rd year of CSD in Milwaukee. Volunteers helped prepare 21 different schools for the upcoming school year, impacting at least 10,000 students. Activities included painting walls and rooms, cleaning, organizing classrooms, landscaping and more. Giving Back Impacting the lives of homeless children For JulieMarzano , Service Operations Manager, Southeast Zone, helping homeless kids with their homework at the Women’s Campus of Nashville Rescue Mission is an important way to give back to her community. “Over time you see that being a regular volunteer has a huge impact on these kids,” said Julie. “In their world, where there is so much change, having a consistent person who is there for them really seems to go a long way in building their confidence.” For the last year, Julie has been giving an hour or more each week to help homeless kids with their homework. Many residents have been unable to return to their damaged homes and have been forced to live in small trailers provided by FEMA while their own home awaits restoration. Art Larson , GM–Global Services Training & Documentation, led our GE team’s volunteer effort through Samaritan’s Purse, a nonprofit organization. The team’s work to restore three homes included drywalling, painting, cleaning, electrical, plumbing, appliance installation, and finish carpentry.
